The move was planned a year ago, and among the thousands of things to do was the need to downsize our stuff. We individually made decisions about what to keep, toss, or donate. As a staff we pitched in to help others in the process. We worked as a team as we unpacked in the new space and prepared for the work this season (which for us includes preparing for the US Presidential Election).

As I went through my stuff I was struck with the realization that many persons have contributed to my growth as a person and a designer: family (immediate and extended), teachers (schools and professional via events, Lynda.com, and Linked In), organizations (church groups, service organizations like Kiwanis, and professional organizations) and co-workers past and present. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities given to me, and the grace many showed to me along the way. While at times hard, I'm also grateful for those who had the courage to confront me when I was about to make the wrong choice for myself, family or work projects.
Here we go!

Taking advice here and looking back on the work I've been doing on my day job as an in-house designer.

One of the privileges I've had is to help World Book re-purpose some of our content into e-books. We replaced fonts, added new images, and created cover art resized for the ePub format. It's been a challenge, and a lot of fun. I appreciate the support of our managers and creative team!
Our Marketing Team has done a great job keeping World Book before our customers, and supporting our sales representatives. Our designers have supported their efforts, producing print and digital catalogs, sales sheets, and e-blasts.

Last but not least, there has been the print and digital product work our teams produce. For over 90 years we've made information for students of all ages easy to use and easy to understand. I'm looking forward to the work to come in 2015.

Experiencing design and the arts in Chicago was a highlight of 2014. In addition to the design exhibits I saw a printmaking show recently. Pics and artist credits are below. I plan to see more of what Chicago has to offer this year.
A web search and a visit to a gallery stirred memories of my early career as a designer: those firms I learned about in class and names of famous designers in the city. I'm fortunate to have known and worked with some of them. Chicago is a great place for designers to work, network, and grow.

Following is a gallery of websites and links for people who want to learn more about the history of Chicago's graphic designers. Content on the sites is copyrighted and owned by the respective organizations.
She's a member of an organization for Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses, or WOCN. Each year they have a convention to learn about the latest techniques to help their patients, network, and honor members—male and female—who provided outstanding care during the year. This year the convention was in the Music City of the United States, Nashville, Tennessee (some of you probably guessed Motown. Sorry). I had never visited Nashville before, so I was looking forward to going with her. (OK, our wedding anniversary took place during the conference. I didn't want to spend the time alone at home.<3)

While in Nashville I was treated to a variety of graphic, architectural, poster design and product design. I was blown away. There is a lot of great graphic design work being done there. Let me share some of it with you. Photos were taken by me. Logos and design work is the property of the various copyright holders. Don't make me add watermarks, kids.
While my wife was at the conference, I took in the sights during a daily walk. On one of those days I decided to visit the Frist Museum of the Visual Arts near our hotel. I planned to be inspired by the classical and contemporary art. Imagine my surprise to see the poster below. I was drawn in.
We also visited the Mecca of Country Music, the Grand Ole Opry. One evening we attended a show that included the country music debut one of the "Pretty Little Liars" actresses. We also took the backstage tour another day and got to stand in that famous circle of wood where the current and legendary country performers have stood. What a thrill it was. I love their logotype!

Hi friends,

Yes it's been awhile, to put it lightly. Had a busy December (as I'm sure you did too)! Time to Catch up!

Catch up #1: Things I'm learning along the way I thought I knew
I thought I knew page layout applications. Sometimes the solutions you really don't know are the ones that have been hiding in plain sight. One of my weekly tasks has been to add sales rep tables to a newsletter. Excel docs were given to me. The names of the reps sometimes appeared in all caps. I used a site that a colleague recommended called Convert Case to change the all caps to caps and lower case (c/lc). It worked fine. As we added more data in subsequent projects, copying and pasting took more time and required more checking and double-checking to make sure names read correctly.

One particular week I was short on time and long on content. I began to wonder, isn't there a better way? I was reminded by one of our in-house designers of a sub-menu item named Change Case. Here it is in Quark XPress 9.

The author included in his thoughts a quote from former U.S. President Bill Clinton. The unusual quote started a side web search of other quotes from USA presidents. That led to a search of public domain images that could be used to illustrate various techniques and designs.
From our last post: updates for Quark 10 and 9 that are more Mavericks and Windows friendly are available at Quark's website.
There are many designers who have never tried Quark XPress. For many years Quark was the go-to page layout program for graphic designers. During the late 1990's-early 2000's, Quark the company had a huge falling out with its customers, and designers started using Adobe's InDesign instead. Quark responded—improving its customer service arm and adding features the design community wanted. With each version of Quark XPress, improvements help designers who have grown accustomed to the way it works in print, web, SWF export, and ebook formats.

This post is not meant to start a Quark vs. InDesign war. Pariah Burke covered that famously here. My 30 day trial of Quark 10 was just enough time to view the Quark features I'm most familiar with and to experience its new interface. Let's dive into it.

The New UI
Quark 10 ships with a darker user interface (UI). This is comparable to the Creative Suite/Creative Cloud applications. Anyone who has worked with these panels, layers, and so on will feel right at home.

Where did Modify go?
Power users of Quark XPress use the Modify command in a number of ways. The biggest surprise you'll encounter as a long time user is looking for Modify in the Item menu or, using the key command (Command-M, Mac) to bring up the dialog boxes you're used to.

Of course, Quark didn't leave us in the lurch. The Modify selections are now in the Measurement pallette.
While you can position the Measurements Pallette at the bottom of your device screen, it may help to move it to the top of your Workspace, similar to the Adobe CS/CC programs.
Other features
Quark XPress 10 added QR code creation technology to its software. You can create codes for your clients within a project.

Quark also improved the way it creates and exports projects to PDF. Quark calls it a "deeper understanding" of PDFs.

The layout in this post includes text and images from my last post on Cruising. The QR code on the page takes you to this blog.

I enjoy being at home, but I like to occasionally get out and enjoy the wonders of the world (even if it's to my local library or Barnes and Noble).

My wife and I like to travel. Several years ago we began taking short cruise vacations. Last year we took a cruise on one of the major cruise lines, Royal Caribbean. We experienced a weather-related delay before we could board the ship, but once underway we had a great time. On one of those days the designer's hat went on and I began to notice things that helped to make my stay as a designer more memorable. I'd like to show just a couple (I won't be showing videos or posed pictures, in case you were wondering) that demonstrate the power of user-friendly graphic design.

One of the questions people want to know when cruising: where is the front of the ship? When you're on a large vessel it can be unnerving if you don't know where you are. On our ship, visual clues began on our door.

Each room number has a blue triangle that points to the front, or forward, of the ship.
(Red circle) The deck number was changed for privacy.

If you're walking below deck you may also see signs like this.
The logo for Royal Caribbean is displayed in hundreds of ways throughout the ship, large and small, with and without the company name. There is consistency and tasteful symbol usage throughout. From the placement on the ship to their website, it's apparent the design and marketing team there takes design seriously, while using the graphics to convey a sense of upscale, fun quality.

Almost the last word: iPhone photos for this post were taken by me. Royal Caribbean name, logo, and elements featured in this post are property of Royal Caribbean International. Be inspired, but don't steal.
Finally, a big thank you to InDesign Secrets hosts Anne-Marie Concepcion and David Blatner for mentioning World Book and myself in their 200th podcast episode. What a humbling moment! A testimony to God's hand on my life and the people who have helped to shape my career along the way. I'm grateful.

Been busy with family doings as well as multiple projects at work.

We had a wedding in our family recently. As part of the preparations we used our creativity to help make a memory for my daughter and new son-in-law. My wife made the table settings. One of my sons organized a Spotify playlist, and served as our reception DJ. The vocalists in the fam sang during the wedding service. My oldest son designed the wedding program.

Table cards for the wedding were designed to complement my son's wedding program design. The font used for the table numbers and heads is Little Lord Fontelroy NF Pro ($10 at myfonts.com), and the florid is from a vector pack. The table cards were assembled with Photoshop layers and exported as jpegs. We printed the cards and trimmed them. Finally the cards were placed in card table stands we bought at IKEA.

Also prepared but not used was a wedding favor tag design that was to color coordinate with the food that guests were to be served (beef, chicken, kid-friendly, and vegetarian).

Here are a couple of other designs I've worked on since the last post. I should say, played with, because that's a more accurate description. A friend of mine occasionally shares beautiful images from NASA on social media. I checked out the images on NASA's site, and downloaded a couple for book cover/jacket sample design/exploration. The imagery is the star here. Comps were assembled with Photoshop.
You have print design samples that you want to place on the web. You have friends who design sites, but you want to "take the plunge" yourself. Where do you start?

In a word, templates.Yes, I know we have software (Dreamweaver and Muse) to perform the heavy lifting. But templates can be a great place to begin the process. Studying the styles and structures of template designers—including the underlying code—can help you decide your site's appearance and functionality. With hundreds of template site designs available, there are many designs you can obtain free and for purchase. Clear, easy to use instructions make it a less intimidating process.

Before you begin, though, you should be familiar with the process of designing sites. Here's one site. Another great resource is this one. Assuming you've already thought about the issues mentioned now it's time to look at templates. There are a lot of free designs. Some good, some not. One popular site for free and templates for purchase and site hosting is Wix, the site I used for the examples below. Here is one of their templates. This is a free site design that you can download after creating an account. I modified the index, or home page.

Site design from Wix.com

Using the tools provided I was able to change the colors, style, and modify the template.

I also inserted my own images. With the tools inside Wix I was able to enchance images and perform simple cropping.

This example shows how you can, with a little bit of effort, create a website based on a template. Obviously there is more that can be done. I plan to continue the work with this and other designs. Stay tuned.

Don't be afraid to take the leap and try out a few template designs. Make it your own, and use social media sites, and portfolio sites like Behance to get your work out there.
Between the weather tragedies in Oklahoma, Texas and other places, and a local teen struck by lightning a few blocks from home, it's a sobering reminder how precious life is. Take a moment to let someone know they matter to you. I hope you know that wherever and however this post finds you, your support for this blog matters a great deal to me. Thank you.

My external drive needed to be erased recently. As I was preparing to do so by backing up files, I found an older version of Photoshop CS6 before the update that turned off 3D on my system. (Thank you God and Time Machine). I reinstalled the older version and re-named it on my desktop. I just have to remember not to double click on a 3D file, launching the 'newer' Photoshop.
Anyway here are some quotes. I've included URL's of the sites I visited. I will finish this list with a few of the ones I learned along the way.
(David and Anne-Marie's program was recorded and posted before me) Check it out! One of the website notes links back to a list of 150 InDesign resources. It is a very cool list! Congrats to Anne-Marie Concepcion and David Blatner for adding Creative Pro.com and InDesign Magazine to their company!

Today's post covers changing type to outlines. I was excited to show samples from various software programs. Shown below are headline size bold type converted to outlines, and further manipulated using features in the software.

First up is Photoshop (the one I opened first). In CS 6, I created a new document. With the type tool I keyed some text.

Museo 900 font (purchase via myfonts.com)

Next the type was converted to shapes.

Continuing in the Adobe family with InDesign. Created a new document, added some type. with type selected I converted it to outlines.
You can also use the outline shapes as a logo.

.

(photo courtesy Pam S. and Tim L.)

Just because you can create type outlines doesn't mean you SHOULD, though. For long text documents, for example, it's best to Collect (Quark XPress) your legally acquired fonts with image files, Package (InDesign) with layout and image Links, or Save/Export the document as a PDF. See the following InDesignSecrets article here. See also this article and this video. For visually striking headlines, logos, and works of art, creating outlines is one of the designer's best friends.
If you're like most print and media designers you'll answer adobe.com or lynda.com. If they ask about books, Peachpit Press and Adobe Press may be the names you give them. But what if you want to maximize your info search in a minimum amount of time? What are some other sources.
Cory Barker gave one of his many tutorials on 3D effects. I was inspired to play a little with Photoshop CS6. Episode ended, I fired up Photoshop while listening to the InDesign Secrets podcast (who says men can't multitask?). Created a new document, used the pen tool to create a half bottle shape. Added a gradient fill. So far, so good. Selected the 3D tab. But I can't select any items on the tab. Uh oh.

Seems I forgot about the dialog box that opened after a recent Creative Cloud subscriber update to Photoshop. The 3D feature that replaced Repousse (was one of the selling points) no longer works with my 128MB VRAM iMac. Adobe's response in the link and sales support is to replace the video card. Unfortunately (for me) my video card is attached to the motherboard, and possibly cannot be replaced. Bummer.

But since I was still in the mood for a little fun, I launched Illustrator CS 6. The 3D feature, while not as robust as Photoshop, still works. Sample illustrations are below. In honor of St. Patrick's Day (the patron saint who brought the Good News to Ireland), green is the dominant color choice.
Time enjoyed.

I'd still like to be able to use the 3D feature with Photoshop CS6 again. A possible motherboard customization or new iMac is not in happening this year. Maybe Adobe will change the requirement with a future upgrade if we all ask really nicely. But as many of you have already learned, when life gives you a lemon, it's time to make lemonade. I'm grateful I have a job and can afford the Creative Cloud subscription.

Today I'd like to share something you probably already know, especially if you use Photoshop: layers are your friend. In addition to the usual ways most people work, Adobe introduced the idea of layout comps years ago. I haven't heard if designers and photographers use the feature. It's still there (Window>Layer Comps [Mac]).

Some designers use layers in their layout programs to isolate elements they want to turn on or off. An example would be a layout containing one type layer for U.S. English audience and a type layer for Spanish-speaking readers.

As part of the design process, you should try using the layers in your page design program to determine which combination of font style works best with your graphics.

I created a simple restaurant menu cover design. Using InDesign CS6, I brought in an image of a salad plate and lowered its' opacity to 20%.

screen capture, InDesign CS6 print preview

On another layer I created a vertical arrangement of squares with a single rounded corner in InDesign, placing it on its own layer.

menu cover with art graphic

Now to experiment with various fonts I selected. Each font is on its own layer.
It's the sort of thing your design instructors might assign in college. Here are a few that I have done in my spare time. I have credited the type designers in the graphics. The typefaces shown are on my home computer, purchased or shipped with my iMac. I used Quark XPress 9.5 for the project layouts. Layouts were exported to PDF then saved as PNGs (Photoshop CS6).
He made them as realistic as possible because it was a class assignment. He spent hours on each charcoal sketch to make things look just right. He and others in the class completed the assignment. Imagine their surprise when the instructor asked them to rip the drawings up and use the pieces to create a collage.

That budding artist was me. I wasn't thrilled at the time. I did the collage, though. Something about grades that gives one additional incentive. I think back on it now, and ask myself: why did it bother me? I'm sure my mom (and yours) was so proud of the magazine and newspaper collages that graced our home fridge as a kid. I like the collage art Jack Kirby created for The Fantastic Four during the Marvel Age of Comics. I realize now my instructor wanted us to not be afraid to make something new out of something we worked hard on.

A few years later, I was asked to design a cover for a World Book article reprint. In the days before desktop computers, World Book's sales force used reprints to show potential customers the features of The World Book Encyclopedia. My cover design was meant to show iconic African-Americans in a new way. (Years ago the article title was Black Americans. World Book has since changed the article title to African Americans.) For my design I took back and white images, made color copies in combinations of CMYK and various sizes. I cut them out and rearranged them to make a new graphic. I thought the design would then be assigned to a freelance artist, but our team thought it worked best as 'xerox art'. We made better quality copies, and had a freelance production artist put the design together as keyline art.
We realized some readers might not recognize some of the persons on the cover, so we added a sketch with their names on the inside back cover. Our photo editors provided credits, and the photo sources were compensated for use of the images.
If we were to recreate the cover today, the composite image would consist of images layered and colorized with an editing program like Photoshop. But the principle of collage would be the same as it was in the late 1900's B.P. (Before Photoshop). Making collages can be fun!

Speaking of World Book, take a few moments to visit World Book's website. Any one of our print or digital products would make a great gift for a budding student or family!
It's great to think about past design experiences. The projects and campaigns assigned to you. Clients and vendors who became friends. Mentors and co-workers who affirmed your talents—sometimes engaging in friendly creative competition. You may have received a number of awards from your peers. Or maybe the project that gives you the most joy is the one you did pro bono. No one notices it but you and the cause or organization you helped.

It is great to look back but you can't remain in neutral. You must move forward.

Moving forward might mean going back to school to learn a new design skill, or learning on your own (as many of my current and former co-workers have done). It may mean you take on a project that's outside your comfort zone. A Flash based website designed by a friend spurred me to begin this blog. A Dreamweaver project for my employer introduced me to the world of HTML years before knowing HTML and now HTML5 became essential for designers and web developers. The possibilities presented for e-books and other media driven projects make it a scary AND an exciting time to be a graphic designer.

It may also mean that even in a tough economy sometimes you have to spend (or invest) a little to ensure you have what it takes for the long haul. For example, Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription model might be right for you. Purchasing an iPad or Android tablet may help you better understand how adults and children use and learn with these devices. You might choose to learn Quark XPress or Apple's Pages programs.

If you're a new designer, I hope the experiences of the past that you've studied and the understanding of the technology and new methodologies in graphic design that you have embraced prepared you well. You will still have much to learn, and the veterans like me will learn a lot from you.

Northern Illinois University's fight song has a verse that begins with the words "Forward, Together Forward." I like the thought of the line. We may have been given great abilities, but we need the help, teaching and encouragement of other like minded people to come along side us (in addition to our families and friends).

Let's all go forward, together.Isaiahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744459316490906564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538066772466048213.post-88471427719053425182012-07-11T22:31:00.000-07:002012-07-11T22:44:12.616-07:00Links on the Right, Create Art from PhotosHi.

Before working on this post I checked out one of the links to the right, Design Festival. The post shared 5 free resources for designers. It's worth a look and a few downloads. Check out the others too.

It was time to change the blog design too. Hope this one is a little easier on the eyes.

Some time back I encouraged you (and myself) to spend a moment using the filters that ship with Photoshop. As I recall it was with an image taken after a snowstorm.

With Photoshop CS6 recently I used the filters to play with similar effects.

I duplicated the background first, then applied a filter to the new layer.

Thanks for checking in.

Since last time Quark XPress released an update, 9.3. The main feature is the ability to export a file to Kindle's MOBI format. If you are a Quark 9 user you will want to install and use the update.

To get the benefit of the update you'll also need to install KindleGen available here. Quark will prompt you to do so if you don't already have it. KindleGen will download and install the Kindle Previewer. This tool will help you ensure text and graphics appear properly.
Recently I saw a tip from the Before and After website. The video discussed the technique of using an oversize image for maximum impact. By the way, John McWade provides a great service to novice and established designers with his videos and PDFs.
For fun I developed some banner designs based on a variation of the principle.
Many designers aren't familiar with the great effects you can create within InDesign. You can find a cool resource at the InDesign Secrets store. Mr. Rankin wrote the e-book for users of CS3 and above, but there were a few tricks I could accomplish with InDesign CS2.
Imagine what you will be able to do with CS 6!Isaiahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744459316490906564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538066772466048213.post-83907121100591848322012-04-09T23:27:00.000-07:002012-04-09T23:27:06.232-07:00A look at Photoshop CS 6Shortly before Passover and Easter, Adobe released a beta version of Photoshop CS6. Like millions of designers, photographers, motion graphics specialists and others, I downloaded the software. You can too here for a limited time. There are a couple of websites that will walk you through the new features. One is Scott Kelby's Photoshop User website with a special link. Lynda.com has a series of videos presented by Deke McClelland on the features. A third is Photoshop Cafe. Visit these sites to learn more.

These are a few of my favorite things about CS6 (so far. Makes you want to sing with the Von Trapp family).

One: importing images from your camera or mobile device directly into Photoshop. I really like this. Following are a couple of images I imported from my phone, sized and added a watermark. Cool.

Two: 3D type effects. Much improved from CS5.

Three: Content-Aware Move. This is a phenomenal feature. When it works it's a great time saver. But like content-aware scale, it works on some things better than others.

Here's a photo of a guy on a cruise ship taking a picture.

I made a selection (tighter than recommended) of the gentleman and his reflection on the deck. I then selected the Content-Aware move tool, and moved the figure to the right.

When Photoshop completed its processing, the man was now at the right, but he left a halo. In addition, there is an issue with the chairs and the rest of the ship receding into the distance. You'd spend a fair amount of time cloning and patching afterwards.

Still, pretty amazing when you have the right type of image on a white or covered background like grass or a brick or concrete wall.

Fourth: Paragraph and Character styles. I'm enjoying adding effects to the styles. Here are two.

Glow effect

Gradient applied to editable type

So give it a try. Take the opportunity to tell Adobe what you like about CS6. Offer suggestions for tweaks. Last but not least, thank them for allowing a free preview of the program all of us use daily.
Isaiahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744459316490906564noreply@blogger.com0
